Kitty that is so true. Many moons ago, working my first job at a burger place, the first thing we were taught is suggestive selling. Half the time people don't even think of buying a certain thing until you ask them if they want it. So we were taught to ask if they wanted something extra and half the time they would buy it. Advertising & marketing is the same thing.

As a 'list' person, I started using a Post-it note sheet as a 'Want' sheet, when I see it and believe the price acceptable, I have the option to buy. However, if an item isn't on my list, I can add it. The unanticipated benefit was that impulse buying was nearly crushed.

Experience has taught me that often buying an item based on price or some other factor rarely meets my expectations long term. I enjoy shopping with friends when they are seeking something specific but I've nearly stopped shopping with others when I'm the buyer. Friends often encourage purchases that only halfway satisfy. Worse, we have a 'new in, old out protocol so that sale price on new black pumps requires me to relinquish something I really like. Lose/lose

I do find that I spend when I go shopping with certain people who encourage you to spend. Also certain places I shop at I find I spend more there so I pay that little bit extra at other places and only get what I need to buy not all stuff the that tempered to buy or in bigger amounts.

I have learnt to choose where I shop and with whom. So I can have the things that I want to buy and save money by doing that.
