Taking a closer look at my daily living allowance for 2009

December 27th, 2008 at 11:43 am

As I always start my budget a few weeks before the New Year I have already started with this challenge. After finalizing my budget tallies for 2008 and setting out a new budget for 2009. I would say that this is one area I could find some saving in my budget. As it did have a few large amounts of over spending last year. I am hoping to cut over $1000 from it over the year on what I spent last year or better. Its all those little items included that mount up. As this the area that I do have some control over in my spending.

This is what I have allowed around each month or much less by averaging it over the whole year.

Kitty, do you have a separate budget for pay for insurances such as auto, home and health, and for utilities like phone, electric, internet, water?

You are a very healthy senior with only $5 a month prescriptions! Good on ya!

Thanks for sharing your budget and menus.

Pensioners & Health Care Card holds get subsidized subscriptions for $5.30 per script. I only have one script per month but get $12 per month for all subscriptions that I can get over the year with my Age Pension. Then after a certain number of scripts per year then you can get them for FREE for the rest of the calendar year. For a single pensioner its around 62 scripts then free. Workers and non cardholder have to pay about $32 per script for listed prescription and everyone pay full price for non listed ones. We have had just had cost rise and even with just a rise of 30c on pensioner ones, some with large number of prescriptions per month dropping the painkillers so that they can buy food etc. My DF-M does get them free by the end of the year. I am just happy that I dont need to take so many to qualify.

I divide my pension in two, one is Daily Living Allowance, another is Fixed Bill Account which is on track. Do have a look at my last few posts for more information.

Oh yes, I see now! Somehow I missed your earlier posts. The Excel spreadsheets are a great idea, and the 3 month floater funds are terrific for the big regular expenses on a fixed income budget. I'm impressed that you can track everything to the penny. I have never tried that because it just seemed too time-consuming, but I know it's the ONLY way to really know where our money goes.

After doing it in one way or other since the 1970's only now I do it for every cent I get and spend, in the past 3 year I have saved about $6000 out of my pension, just last week I did transfer a $1500 to an online a/c as it's my annual fixed bills surplus and floats for 2009-10, I will only use if the need arises. I live pension to pension and only going into bill a/c if I don't have enough to cover the bills that month. But I do have a float of $1000 in the pension a/c which makes it easier not to. There are a lot of tricks you can do when you don't have debt repayments to worry about. I am Debt free at the moment.
