No Spending Day

April 22nd, 2007 at 09:20 am

Well I may get a few no spending days this time, as today is another one.

The most important thing I did today was watering my garden after 4pm until 7pm. It is taking about 70 –80 minutes to water my whole garden beds with a bucket or watering can. I trying to use as much grey water that I have each time I do water. I do like to have it finish before the daylight goes but soon it will be dark at 5pm here. Some parts of my garden don’t have any lights so will need to do these areas first in the future.

BREAKFAST Muesli & Milk Coffee
LUNCH Pumpkin & Carrot Soup with bread & Hummus spread.
DINNER Spaghetti Bolognese Coffee

Nice no spend days! I find it interesting that you water in the evening rather than the morning since conventional wisdom says that watering in the evening may encourage some diseases. I like that you use as much grey water as you can! I'm trying to get DH to build a cistern and put up some rain barrels for watering.

I can only water in the evening now, if I don't want to pay $150 fine per day. This is the new water times (4pm to 7pm) Would you believe it was the nursery industry that ask for this time of day. I would refer to water in the early (sunrise) morning if I could.

Wow, the nursery industry suggested those hours? I wonder if it's to encourage disease so they sell more plants. Wink

    That's what I thought!

I am too frugal to buy plants at nursery anyway. If any of my plants do die then I only replace them after the drought is over. I have been using low water method on all my plants since I took over this garden 18 years ago from my father. Most is the same as it was then and what I have added is going better than most plants around here now. They were out of old garden that was to be pulled up for a carpark and very sickly at that, now have the most leaves and flowers of all of the same kind shrubs around

One was a Gardenia now 9 ft. and the other is Ixora chinensis (Prince of Orange) 8ft, another one that's doing well from self seeding is Pachystachys coccinea. All are getting one bucket of grey water twice per week and that's all!

So, what low water methods do you use? I'm interested to know. And a 9 ft gardenia? Wow, and I do well to keep one alive for more than a year or two! Tell me how you do your grey water, please.

If you click Garden on the left hand side of this blog. You will find all the post referring to grey water and garden.

I don't know what variety the Gardenia is! Most around here like it are just a 3ft high and with leave on twigs. It was about 10 years old when I got it and like one's above. I put it a large pipe in the ground that is used as edging and very deep so it get deep watering. both trees are in these and in these pipes 2ft away is two 6ft high crotons but seven crotons in all.
