Update

July 13th, 2016 at 02:33 am

Hi everyone
Just quick drop in again.
On the computer front that one I bought in February was a Lemon and was replaced when it ATE the DVD disk and end up in the back of the computer it was too risky to leave there for the warranty to run out. And it was just 3 months old.

It was replaced at no cost with a better one which turns out is a touch screen and double Gigabyte etc. But costed money to download all the programs as there was only Widow 10 on it with the amount data that was download that month. I only can have Mobile Broadband which is expensive here. Now I have a better deal with IP. So in the end I did win for now!

Strategy - Know what you are in title too!

Quick drop in

February 28th, 2016 at 12:56 pm

I have been doing a lot around here but not online as much as before.

Spending my savings on eye operations and new computer as my last one died on me. I am still trying to learn to use Window 10 was having major problems with it. Like not working with major error.

I will update later when I can see better.

Have a great leap year day for 29th February.

Roof Replacement Update

June 26th, 2015 at 01:36 pm

Is on its way after a long wait of almost 7 months since the storm hit. When you have over 70,000 roofs to be replaced and limit number of tradesmen to do it all and still build new houses it a big ask.

Owing to our cyclone codes here it has to be done to that standard and all jobs have to the latest codes.

My house had asbestos roof at one stage and all that rubbish was left in the roof and not removed so it wasn't up to days code standard so I had a bit of wait for them go ahead with the job after they put up all scaffolding as they had get it reviewed by the insurance company for the extra cost.

They are now back and putting on the new roof and hope to be finish it soon. A lot of the houses around here have scaffolding up and work men working on them.

House Repairs after the Storm

June 8th, 2015 at 11:19 pm

They are still not done but it's on its way, so by the end of June, I should have 99% of the work done.
I had that job done but whether it has been done right it's another matter. At least I have a State company doing it, some roofers are coming from oversea and interstate to do the work but are doing it wrong as we have different codes here than some of other states because of the Cyclones which means a lot more roof nails and special tying down code has to be done and they doing as their own codes and with all the rain we have had in the last few months, some of the roofs are leaking and causing more damage and insurance companies now checking the work with other Asser's to see everyone doing the right thing. All the companies that are doing my work are Asser's firms.

This and That

February 15th, 2015 at 12:27 am

You will hear about if the opposition wins that for sure! They only hold 9 seats but not many are happy with the present one!

Guess what they won, we have a new state government after all this time it has been decided that opposition have won and can form government.

Tell the voters you are going to sell or lease the state assets and you will lose government that's the message everyone has got I hope this time. The premier was voted out of his sit, his party lost 37 sits in an 89 sit parliament now that tell them off. It finished off with 44 to 42 with 3 independents one which sided with the opposition to give them right to govern.

A No Spend Day here

S-t-r-e-t-c-h those Dollars even more

February 5th, 2015 at 03:06 pm

We had major hail storm in my area late last year; I am down for a new roof and a few other things that need to be replaced. The insurance company will pay up but only if I have some maintenance done on one part of the roof first. I have tried to get someone to do this work so that other jobs can be done. Out of the three companies that contacted only one came up with a quote and call here. I will go with this company now. It's over month now since I was told about the maintenance to be done and all were called that day. Now if there was no work then the quote most likely cheaper but with two major storms within two weeks and over million widows broken and over 50 suburbs in trouble from the hailstorm alone. Some houses still have boards over windows and will not be look at before end of March, as for getting a tradespersons that can do insurance work you are lucky if one is around before middle of 2016 for any other jobs.

The quote is under my maximum price but a bit on high side. I am looking at a bill for $3800. It's lucky I have my suppuration rainy account to fall back on but I must top it up again so I will be stretching those dollars a little bit more.

I am only keeping this house liveable but not at resale standard. So only maintenance jobs that I have to do will get done.

It's lucky that my car was not Hail damaged it was in the garage as all of them are being written off.

This and That

January 30th, 2015 at 02:28 am

Budget updated
A No Spend Day here

I do track my spending and no spending daily.

We are voting tomorrow for new State Government.

You will hear about if the opposition wins that for sure! They only hold 9 seats but not many are happy with the present one!
.
Strategy - Track your daily spending down to the cent by writing it down daily.

My Pension

January 28th, 2015 at 12:54 am

I receive Government Single Age Pension and I meet requirement to get it. I try to live on this amount and bank any extra pension money from suppuration fund against when it runs out in about 2030. I don't have a large suppuration fund as I came into it too late; all fees come out of the fund before I get it and I do get an allotment each month but not enough to live on and will run out in the end. It's now only about around $100,000 and it has to last a lifetime.

It not a lot of money so I need to save more money so the need to 'Living Lean on Pension'.

I can save better than I can earn money.

To live comfortable in future you are looking at around $1million, to do what I am living now! There is talk that anyone born after 1973 here will not get an age pension at all, so there will be a lot of poor people here in the future. Most people living on pension here are at the poverty level anyway and unemployed are worse off than the age pensioners which is around 25% of average basic wage.

Here is a link that will give you more details: Age Pension
.
Strategy - Know what you are entitled too!

Living Lean on a Pension

January 27th, 2015 at 12:58 am

2015 will be Living Lean year as I can and being on age pension. My goal and challenge is Living Lean on a Pension.

I have no other extra income other than my pension, so I have to be as crafty as possible to make it my dollars s-t-r-e-t- c -h further than before.

I do have a little amount put aside for rainy day. Which I use when I need to and pay this rainy day account back out of my saving I can find in my frugal living challenge and any saving I can make on getting low bills which of late are increasing instead.

I will try cut back on my food, entertainment areas and personal allowance. I do better with challenges by focusing on certain areas than trying to do it over all challenge in all areas at once.

I will try to reduce my spending on what spend in the supermarket and on treats in personal allowance areas to start with.

I still wish to go on holidays this year, that about 4 months way. I will try to keep expenses down to minimum as I will be staying most nights with family.

Supermarket Spend Challenge - Try to spend less than half over the next 15 weeks.

Normal amount allowed = $472.00 - Target $230 over 15 weeks starting on Friday when my next monthly period starts. Note all my budgeting periods are 28 days in length.

Personal allowance and entertainment will try cut by 30% for now and go lower if I can do so.
.
So my motto will stand for another year or two.

It's real hard to come up with $1000 but it's easy to find 1000 ways to save a dollar or two!
So let's go and find those 1000 ways to save a dollar challenge and see what's amount is at the end of 12 months.

Finally I am back been busy!

December 16th, 2013 at 12:19 pm

I have been very busy working on doing some renovations in some rooms here. Getting all the stuff that I collected over 40 years is hard to pack up and move it to other rooms so they could get at these rooms. I have had a new kitchen and breakfast room makeover done. I still am doing some painting that will be finished in January sometime owing to festive and school holidays and lot of people take this period off for their annual holidays.

At the moment I am working on my pantry which had to be done as well. I was planning to move the pantry into the kitchen but this is not going to happen now! I am putting it back as before minus a few things and replanning it if I can.

I did repaint it and had new shelving put there, so it good to go for the rest of my time here. I can't move any shelving around as they are fixed to fit the old shelving spacing. The cabinetmaker had to remove then cut each shelf to fit too!

I don't know if I have a before work photo I will one if I have. They went up in 1951 so it was time to a refit there. When I am finish repacking it I will post a photo of it.

After painting it but before fitting out with new shelving. These shelves are at least 40 plus years old.
.
Strategy - If it can be fixed then repair it, but use the less than half rule on replacement costs

Strategy - If it can't be fixed then buy or replace it within your means. You don't to buy everything new either!

I will need to catch on my financial summaries soon I am way behind on them!

Cutting back on supermarket spending

July 5th, 2013 at 01:12 pm

Looking at my food and supplies stockpiles, I think I can go at least until November without buying too much in the way of food and supermarket items. Just all the perishables will still need to be bought so I will see how much can get my grocery allotment in my budget down in the coming months starting with my next post. My next monthly summery is almost ready to be posted here.

I have been working on reading and editing on trove this past few weeks so havenít posted that much anywhere.

Bit slack in posting here.

June 20th, 2013 at 01:23 pm

I have been working on another site of late but spending very little money too!
One of my hobbies is reading recipes that posted years ago, so as I have joined the Local History group, I was given a link to our National Library Australia digital archives trove where they have posted most of our old newspapers and the Australian Womenís Weekly until under copyright periods. So anyone can read these online now.

I have been having fun reading and these old newspapers and Australian Womenís Weekly what I did is studying just one year and period that I am interest in. Copying and correcting recipes as I read them and other information as I found them.

With the newspapers I have been looking out for information for my local history group too!
Itís interesting to see how people lived and worked and died over this period, as I am reading World War Two year as I am interested in how to save money and cooking and rationing during that period.

Bit of Nostalgia today

May 29th, 2013 at 12:51 am

Our city hall has been closed for restorations for past few years, and now is open to the public again.
Today I joined my ex-work friends in going to the cheaper restaurant they have there, itís was known as Red Cross tea rooms but a company has been allow to put a coffee shop rest rooms there. Itís been laid out just like the old Red Cross tea room without the clock rooms. We had our lunch there today, the menu is limited but eatable, I had feta and spinach quiche and salad plus a mug of coffee. This set me back $14.00 so itís not cheap by any means. Some of the others tried toast sandwiches or scones and cheese cake. Next time if we go again, I will have a chicken salad I eat a lot of toasted sandwiches or soup for lunch over winter so I donít wish pay for something I can make myself.

Later we went to look at the other tea rooms that have been put into the city hall, ĎShingle Inní this is a 1920s style one that was pull down to make way for a new shopping centre and was to be put back in the same spot when finishís but never was so the council said they would allow room for it to go into city hall when it reopened and they kept their word on that one. Itís so popular that you have to book in 24 hours ahead to go there just for morning tea or afternoon tea. This tea room is the same period as the city hall and all the old fittings have come out of moth balls only thing that not the same is the staff uniforms as old one were not up to safety standards of today. So they have changed them to old fashion 1920s black servant uniforms instead. The original one was colourful prints and long skirts. We worked next door to this restaurant for many years and saw these girls over the years.

Ant problem!

May 3rd, 2013 at 10:44 am

I am having a large problem with small ants here that are coming from the gardens it is costing a lot to keep them under control. Some are coming into the house which I donít want to happen as last year; I lost number electrical items because of ant nests in them. I did put ant bait down but they just go higher around outside the house. I paid few hundred dollars to have them removed last year and it didnít work for very long just enough so that the painter could paint the outside the house then wet weather came and their came back. I am due for a termite check soon but the meantime I will keep up with my surface spraying that does kill for a short time but they go higher

Cost of living going up again

February 24th, 2013 at 01:10 am

Got a letter in the mail last week to say that my health cover has gone up by $210 for 2013 to be added to next yearís bill this is due this December. Then this week we were told that our electricity bills will be going up by 21% per year around $253 on $1205 bill. I am lucky that I put in solar panels and solar hot water a few years ago now! I donít think my bill will that high but high enough that I will add 21% to my annual total as I have allowed about $100 to $140 per quarter I will allow about extra $30 per quarter so thatís extra $330 added to my budget from July on when these price rises take place. This is on top of my insurance price rise of around $400 last month. Next will be my chiro next one to go up thatís next month price rise.

Weather is bad here again; our ground is soaked from the Januaryís rain depression so it wonít take much to start flooding here.
More rain, flooding, high seas and 100km winds in NSW this weekend and we waiting for another rain depression for our area with about 300mm worth of rain.

Free Spending Spree Day

February 16th, 2013 at 01:38 am

Do you get bored with saving money all the time and feel you need to break the mould sometimes. Well I do as have been on this quest for more years than I can remember now!

When I was a pre-teen my pocket money was two shillings per week, (24 pennies) now days thatís amount would be 20 cents. Value today I have no idea about $2.00. My way of thinking was if an item cost more than 1/11 or 23 pennies, I couldnít afford it. When I got my first pay from my first job things got a little better, after paid my board and fares I had about 10 shillings ($1.00) per week to spend. Wages were about 1 pound and 18 shillings ($3.80) in those early months, this was 1960.

I am retired now and on age pension but my thought patterns are the same almost. Today I save money then I can go do what I like for one day every so often, given certain amount to spend and place to spend to go spend that money or some of it!

Sometimes itís a school fete or op shop or trash or craft market often times it may be shopping centre if in need of some new clothes or appliance. I do set amount that I can spend on these days, most times I never go over it. I never have many of these days about four per year. I had about three last year; one while I was in Sydney and I bought some kitchen items and had the goods posted home.

I call these days ĎFree Spending Spree Daysí and was shopping in Aldi on one of these days last Christmas said to another customer that I was free to buy what I would like today if I wanted too! Would I like to buy her children, both were in the shopping cart? I just smiled and wished her a Merry Christmas and walked on I think she was having a bad day. I only spent about $100 that day as I was buying Christmas gifts too!

All paid

February 7th, 2013 at 01:18 am

Manage to get to the city early enough to get all my bill paying done before my first appointment today.

Paid the insurances and my credit cards off in full yet again, lucky there was enough money in my account to pay them. Thatís withdrawal of $ 2700 today alone.

Had lunch in city of grill fish and salad, the salad wasnít as nice as it could have been Avocado and Chicken Salad so next time will stick to a Greek Salad and the Grilled Fish $7.95 plus a Frozen Chilled Fanta $1.00 and Ice cream cone 50c all up the food $9.45.

As the Chiro is paid for this time but will need to outlay next 12 visits with the next visit somewhere around $600 I should think. But do get rebates of $19.40 for each one not much but it helps. My podiatrist cost $38.50 after rebate today.

In all it was expensive day.

Paying Insurances and other bills

February 6th, 2013 at 12:21 am

Finally I can pay my insurance bills that I was worried about! I spoke about them in these posts.
Tomorrow I will going to the city, can pay up all these and no long worry about them then start saving again after I pay the last two next month.

Starting over with budgeting and saving again!

Review of my spending plan for Bills!

One quote that I set my upper limit at was $650 higher than the final bill. Some households can't just afford to pay insurance on their houses, and after the last flood last week, it may only get higher again next year.

Well my house and contents insurance bill came in $349 above last year about 29% rise. I do have a very low risk of ever flooding here as I am the same height as the hospital helicopter port which is about six stories high on top of the hospital.

My car insurance which is due only 2 weeks earlier has a rise $43 about 9% up on last year. Value has gone down through. But as I get discount by having them all with one company and a senior discount on top this, so I will stay with insurance for another year and review again next year.

As for other bills I will paying my dental bill that I put on my credit card last month and advance payment on the IP bill as I need to make sure that all my bills are paid before the 14 February as I may not be available to pay any after that date and tomorrow is my last day in the city before then. All I need to do now is make sure there is enough money in the bank to pay all these.

I will do a final review of this Bill Challenge in another post. Then will set a new challenge for the balance of the year.

Everything has to go on hold from February 14 as I will not know what I will be doing for a few weeks even I may not be able to come online either. Nothing to worry about either just civil duty service work that I am not too old to do!
